Should You Hire An Event Planner?

People really have trouble with this question! Here is the methodology we use to help clients think about what will be the right direction for them. It is important to think it through and not assume that by hiring a planner you will overspend. Hiring someone great should make it easier to create a better event experience, optimize by efficiently deploying resources, avoid costly mistakes, and come in ON budget.

Good luck out there!

Do You Have The Time?

When we first meet with a potential client for event planning, one of our initial questions is about their free time. Many people don’t realize just how much goes into planning an event until they start. Once a date is set, the planning phase often begins as a part-time endeavor, which can seem manageable and even fun. However, as the event date approaches, especially in the final weeks and months, planning can become a full-time responsibility—a detail often overlooked.

Hiring an event planner is like bringing on a creative, highly skilled executive assistant. If you consider the planner’s fee spread out over the weeks of preparation, their value becomes clear. Add to that the peace of mind they provide on the day of the event, and it’s easy to see why hiring a planner is a smart investment in terms of time and stress management.

Do You Have The Expertise?

Many clients who have the time and choose to plan their own events often have some experience in event planning, which can be incredibly helpful. While many principles of event planning apply across different types of events, there are instances where expertise in one area doesn’t translate well to another. For example, planning a corporate event is quite different from organizing a wedding, which in turn is different from planning a mitzvah. Each type of event comes with its own unique nuances, which can make it beneficial to seek help, even if you have some experience.

For those without event planning experience but who are passionate and excited about the process, it can feel like an exciting new adventure. However, for others, it may seem overwhelming. It’s important to be realistic about your own expertise and consider whether additional support could enhance the outcome of your event.

Do You Have The Passion?

Passion is the final—and perhaps most crucial—question to ask yourself when deciding whether to plan your own celebration. You might have the time and enough expertise to manage, but without passion, it can be challenging to finish strong. It’s important to be honest with yourself about how you’ll handle the inevitable projects and tasks that come your way without professional help.

Do you enjoy the process of creating events? Are you detail-oriented? Can you handle some tedious tasks being added to your plate? Will planning the event enhance your overall experience, or will it leave you feeling drained and questioning your decision? Your enthusiasm for bringing the event to life should be a key factor in determining whether to hire a planner.
